Inequalities in how you treat people
It was a day like any other. She was driving back home and stopped to grab some food to go because it was already quite late and did not want to cook at a late hour in the evening.
She chose an Arabic restaurant because she loved the food and always wanted to try how the food in that restaurant was. This could have happened in any other restaurant. It is just an example.
She comes inside and orders her food. While waiting for the food, she noticed that the cook was preparing some falafel that normally, was not included in what she had ordered, and at that time no other customers were in the restaurant. It was an open kitchen so you could see how the food was prepared.
She found it strange, but it wasn’t none of her business. She waited for less than ten minutes and the food was ready. They packed everything, she went to pay, and the cook offered her a falafel with hummus as a gesture of kindness.
She accepted without even thinking too much about the thing.
But on the way home, she could not avoid asking herself: “Would have the cook do the same if instead of her, another person was there?” Probably yes, because the staff there were all very kind, or probably not.
Why her? Why to her?
She is not the most beautiful person, she is normal, and she likes to take care of herself, but what happens to all the other women that they do not have the means or the time to do it?
What happens to all those mothers that they cannot even put lipstick on in the morning because the kids are crying, wanting to go outside?
What happens to all those mothers that cannot afford to buy for themselves fancy clothes because the kids end their necessities are much more important?
What happens to all those women that are the only ones providing for their family, running from one job to another, so they will have enough at the end at the month, or at least at the beginning of the month?
What happens to all those women that they just simply forgot how to take care of themselves, because life is just too hard sometimes, and that is not a priority anymore?
What happens to all those women that are suffering abuse from their husband and they get forbidden to put any makeup and to dress nice?
What happens to all those old ladies that they are just waiting for the time to come to leave this world because they have no reason or anybody to keep living for?
What happens to all those girls that they go to study and then run to work because they need to pay for their studies?
What happens to all those girls that suffered some accident and they do not have nice hair anymore, or a pretty face, or a beautiful body?
What happens to all those women that simply, weren’t lucky enough?
What happens to all those girls that they have health issues or they do not have the strength to lose weight, or they suffer from depression because we live in a society that judges you by the way you look?
What happens to all these women? And the men can be also in their shoes.
You just need to open the TV and you immediately see what is promoted there: plastic, fake and more plastic and more fake.
You just need to open your social media and you will immediately see what it is promoted there.
You just need to look at the men on the street to see what they are looking at when they are having a walk outside.
And it is also the other way around. Some women concentrate just on the physical aspect, and that is fine. No one should judge the tastes of other person. But a beautiful box does not mean that keeps inside a beautiful present.
I am here right now, enjoying the fresh air after the rain and thinking about this: inequalities in all forms, ways, and environments.
We all are beautiful from inside and outside, but society puts so much pressure that many of us might think that they do not fit there.
We all feel pressured at work, we all feel pressured at school, even with the family and friends sometimes.
The right size for you is the size of your happiness: it might be a small, a medium, a large on an extra-large. If you are happy, confident and the most important, healthy, with the way you are, this is what really matters.
All we see in television, in magazines, on social media, all this we can take as an example if we consider so, but it has not need to be the ending of our self-esteem if we do not manage to look like them.
Not all of us had the luck to be born in a rich family, not all of us happened to be raised in a good country, not all of us happened to meet the right people at the right moment, or to have relationships with the right people and at the right moment, not all of us have the luxury to be able to stay at home and not need to go to work, not all of us happened to get the perfect job and afford everything we wish for.
I think about the nice man from the restaurant and his act. He did not do anything wrong; he was just trying to be nice and kind.
His action made me realized everything I am writing, feeling, and thinking right now. A small gesture from someone can trigger all these emotions, good and bad.
A small gesture from someone can completely change your way of thinking; things that I never considered, but things that are happening daily to thousands and thousands of people and this is – being judged simply by the way you look.
But what if we would try to be kind to everybody, making no difference between people, no matter how they look; beautiful or ugly, skinny or fat, black or white, women or men, young or old?
And you? Have you ever experienced you were treated different just by the way you look?
